The National Bank of Algeria (Banque Nationale d’Algérie, BNA) has reportedly fallen victim to a significant cyberattack carried out by a threat actor known as Phantom Atlas. This breach, announced on a dark web forum, is said to be in retaliation for earlier incidents involving Moroccan websites.
According to Phantom Atlas, they managed to infiltrate the systems of Algeria’s largest state-owned bank, extracting roughly 90 gigabytes of sensitive data. In the first wave of leaks, about 5GB of this stolen data has already been made public, with more expected in the coming days.
The attackers claim this operation was in direct response to cyber attacks against Moroccan platforms. Details about the exact nature of the stolen data remain unclear, but given the scale of the breach, the impact on customer information and internal banking documents could be substantial.
This incident highlights rising tensions in regional cyber activity and the growing risks posed by hacktivist-style operations targeting critical financial institutions.
