A threat actor on a popular dark web forum has shared a database allegedly belonging to the Distance Learning Centre of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU Zaria), Nigeria.
The threat actor claims to provide access to the university’s database through a downloadable SQL file hosted on a public file-sharing platform. The shared dataset appears to include student records, such as names, registration numbers, and password hashes, raising concerns about the potential exposure of sensitive academic and personal information.
The sample data displayed in the forum suggests the records are from 2020, but the full scope and impact of the leak remain unverified. There is currently no evidence of ransomware involvement or direct exploitation linked to this breach.
Educational institutions across Africa continue to face rising threats from data brokers, hacktivists, and low-tier actors seeking to profit from leaked student databases or exploit them for credential stuffing.
