The ransomware group Nightspire has claimed responsibility for an attack on Twaweza, an East African civil society organization known for its education and open governance initiatives. According to the group’s leak site, Twaweza was breached on July 4, 2025, with the stolen data amounting to a massive 2TB, set to be leaked on July 15, 2025, unless their demands are met.
A countdown timer is already running, adding public pressure as negotiations, if any, remain behind closed doors. The scope of the data reportedly in Nightspire’s possession could be significant, considering Twaweza’s involvement with citizen surveys, education data, and governance programs across Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.
